"Some things cost more than you think"

Yeah! Yeah! You'll say she always talks abt changes, KRAANTI, revolution... She asks us to get up, look around, help and blah blah... Ab jab reputation kharaab ho hi gayi.. toh fursat se kharaab kar leti hun :) Last nite while surfing thru channels, I came across a beautiful yet weird video on VH1. It is by THE KILLERS and the song is Good night,Travel Well and in case you wanna watch it, here is the link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoTBclI22Dk I thought it is yet another love-song... but then it SHOCKED me so much that I kept thinking to myself when I was out for my evening walk" WHY?? WHY do people do this to others?"The message at the end says "Some things cost more than you think" and that is so utterly true. Apni Indian society mein, a gal talking abt prostitution and taking their cause is never encouraged. I mean, we all know, it is a taboo in our households. But, being me or to make it sound more apt, being the weird me, I always talk abt it as and when I feel. Coz this is something that has been bothering me, I had no option but to talk it out here. Yet again, I am not going to get in a discussion as to is prostitution justified?? Reason being, if you ask me, I wud never want it to exist coz pata nahi kyun, but somewhere I feel it is the last thing a woman would want to indulge in and for that matter even a man... But then as per studies almost more than 60% women are forced into prostitution much against their will and this video depicts the story of one such woman. Having studied in an engg college, we always heard how a bunch of boys staying outside hostels had sex with prostitutes...some gals were as young as 15 yr old, I wanted to puke when I heard that. In Hyderabad, I was too scared to move out after 9 coz some of the bus-stops are branded as the business areas for them, if by chance your auto takes you from Necklace Road side, you may witness many of them and worst is when we saw a woman (ofcourse she was a call gal) being abused by some politicians kids(laal-batti gaadi thi) on necklace road at arnd 9 pm when we were coming back frm a movie. As always, I tried to shout out but my friend said "Harshita, leave it.Dont forget you are a gal too, Chalo ghar chalo "Hmmm... yahin aake saara maamla thap... It was a very disturbing night for me... cud not sleep, par fir kya hua, kuch nahi.. I carried on with my routine... and once in a while kept wondering, kya hota hoga unn logon ka... :( :( I still think abt the same thing abhi bhi...Seriously, koi kuch bhi kahey... I feel really bad for them... When I was working for AIDS awareness 4yrs back, I came across women, who wud say "Madam, humko sikhaaney ka koi faayda nahi, unko bolo jo humse miltey hain"... Well said... and then we took a session for sweepers, guards, peons, office boys and they shamelessly confessed how they are married and they still visit brothels and they wud never follow protection coz all they seek is pleasure. Hmm... khair... Ab I am not going to judge you or ask you whether you have ever been involved with someone like that... but I appreciate MTV, UNICEF and VH1 for promoting the cause of child-trafficking and prostitution. Kehtey hain naa, rabb sab dekhta hain... Jo jiskey saath jaisa karta hain, waisa milta hain usey... I pray that people get some sense in their head who force kids and women into it and they stop this exploitation that they do in the name of pleasure :( And yet again, I wud say, if you can save someone from this vicious circle of life, save them.... Is-sey achcha kisi ke liye kuch nahi kar saktey yaar... chalo ji... miltey hain.. ciao!!

We talk abt equality here and there, everywhere today, but no one wants to talk abt these people. Keeping the moral side apart(I will come to that later), even if we take this just another business, where both the party is involved, for the sake of equality, the lady here has a right to ask the person to take the protection, otherwise the deal is not through, simple!! But that does not happen. It is only by empowering these ladies, we can solve it, otherwise not matter how many men you convince, you will find more number on the other side to go against you.

somewhere I feel it is the last thing a woman would want to indulge in and for that matter even a man... You are right abt the woman, but dont think you are right abt the man.Men go there just for the pleasure and there is no reason on earth that can defend them. But for the women, it is different. The very first time, a woman indulge in it,may be because of several reason, BF cheated her & duped here there,a relatively large family to bear, some time she is trapped and not able to come out of it(repay a loan her father might have taken). But the problem gets complicated when they give birth to a child. The biggest reality on earth is Papi Pet ka sawal and it is only this which makes them stay in that hell.A mother can do anything for her child (so beautiful does it sound but so harsh reality for them!!). You know other than being a firm GOD believer, one of the reason I believe in praise and punishment after death is that, because I think not every sin can get its worth punishment on this world and a single lifetime is not enough for those bas****s for commiting that heinous crime!! I sincerely believe GOD is there & He is seeing this:-(

Yes, but why rabb kuch kyu nahi karta hai...

Deepika August 25, 2009 at 10:24 AM

Very well said!! Video is touching, good that you shared....
Its something bad I know but it can't be banned thats a fact... All govt. can do is to legalize it and i feel it will help society upto an extent...
No doubt its bad and kind of punishment for women but then for those who want to be in this it can't be stopped but yes it should be banned for minors...

mysterious gal August 25, 2009 at 2:04 PM

Wow.....can i salute you for this post please ?
Ur amazing girl and im proud girls with such strong as well clear thoughts exists.....sach me re i hate it when i m stopped from saying something just because some wrong is being done on a gal and i m a gal......i m what the hell....kissi ko to kuch karna hoga

i know when its a bit late and my mom is freakish if i m out for a walk....i hate it....that my freedom is not curbed because i m out....but because some bastards might be interested to curb me....and its killing...!

And i agree to what those prostitutes say.....i know how these women too had wanted a good life and diseaseless one.....but fate brought them in a profession where customer is right and most customers are there for pleasure and pleasure for themselves....the stories i have read also says they get pleasures from being ruthless with these women.....and thats the worse

and i know how these ppl wd go for protection as they want pleasure....waht r u talking abt such low wages ppl....i once read of this survey done in my campus where most on campus refrained from using protection as they said its not as fun.......and i was shell shocked ....i was like what use of ur education when ur turning animal like and irresponsible being....no doubt the amount of HIV virus is increasing in India

i can go on and on such topics.....i know someone has to take a step and if we all do a bit in their own right ....a lot can be done!

Nicely written ...really proud of you :)

This is such a thought provoking post.
I have no word to say. But I feel so sad for those women who have been dragged into prostitution and fury for the men who exploit such women.

I love it when you write about changes , revolutions !

Even I think its one of the last things a woman wld want to get into.Makes me wonder what makes them choose this.

Thousif Raza August 26, 2009 at 1:33 PM

your posts always leave a sense in everyone that say, yes a change we can make, truly harshita,

everyone is bothered by it, And the society has turned so corrupt that if we get up to make a change, saale wahin gaala daba dete hain, the prob is fear among people that makes them sit where they are, it can only be done if more people come together.

but it also can be done if people understood whats good and whats bad, but even they knowing it don't want to change, it just brings in a sense of helplessness for people like you and me, that we think, damn why cant i do something, but as daily life progresses we just forget it because of the pressure of life that we live in, i too sympathize for them, i really feel sad reading these kida things yaar, sheesh

well i just hope the society learns, but that's like kutte ke duum type, if only people used their heart more than their brains

and thx for your kind words on the blog, i will try doing the things you told me too

take care and keep writing...........

workhard August 26, 2009 at 11:47 PM

This is a very good post.. I personally feel that those who volunteer to get into prostitution are sick... have no self respect....

But those who are forced into it.. it is really sad... and people who promote such activities should be punished severly and castrated..

Its sad to know that the police and the politicians are backing these people

yaar.. like the fatak from kaminey.. theek hai.. whatever it takes them to indulge in such a work, at times i feel those girls would hate their own bodies at times being touched and exploted by so many different kinds of ppl.. the thing is jo ye karte hain, wo bure nahi hain, jo karwate hain wo bure hain.. i wonder at times tht how this profession would have come into existence..
i really wish hum bacha saken kisi ek bhi aise bande ko.. aur rabb sab dekhta hai, u r right.. and jo log kehte hain ke rabb kuch kyn nahi karta, my answer to those ppl is tht God created you to do things on his behalf.. its upto u who do you chose to follow.. the devil or God!!

LifeSmiles:) August 27, 2009 at 8:27 PM

I Luv ur post!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How can u write so well...:)
Amazing post...
From my age of 15, I am thinking that y it happens with gals...Y they always suffer...y they are the one who get blamed for everything..y ..y and y....
but you know wat...world is changing very rapidly...Boys are becoming much more intellectual and caring. Now they have started realizing that gals are not the non living object; which they can twist, use and throw...they have started realizing that they are equal in all aspects as boys...they have started giving respect to girls...but still its too long to go...
I am waiting for the day when all boys/men understand the pain through which girls go
:(
The least we can do is to make our kids a good human being..Atleast they should be out of these kind of hideous task.....

Musings of a lonely traveler August 27, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Hi Harshita!
What a powerful woman you are with your thoughts; yep it's heart-breaking to know the bitter truth of prostitution. As you told it may be the last choice of lady to get indulged in men. Real eye-opener lady :)

U can call me your attorney August 27, 2009 at 10:57 PM

i hvnt seen the video n in colg, youtube is banned :(
but yah..watever said,is true to the core..!! although there may be some minuscule exceptions who enter this profession willingly. But yes,all said and done, trade of flesh is certainly inhuman for both the sexes..
yet i see no reason why prostitutes should not be given status, any other common woman enjoys.

Zeba August 28, 2009 at 8:54 AM

u r so right. i just have nothing to add to u

Akansha Agrawal August 28, 2009 at 7:54 PM

A woman never does it by choice... true, i just don't understand how women can stand and let it happen, worse, they are the ones who force them INTO it... I blame that woman sitting there outside the room, I blame that woman who has locked up all those poor ones inside that room... and I blame every woman who makes them do it, in whatever way...

I don't claim to have a solution to it, sometimes I feel legalisation may atleast save the ones who are unwilling, but then who the hell wills her life this way!!! Banning it obviously won't have an effect, when were bans ever taken seriously... Gujarat kehne ke liye dry hai, kehne k liye hi wahan par Jaswant ki kitaab nahi milegi... Kehne k liye SIMI banned hai, aur kehne k liye Raj Thackrey ki public speaking banned hai....

Manish Raj August 30, 2009 at 11:24 AM

@Deepika
Yes it shud be banned for minors... and for adults, it wud be better if they legalise it and provide some basic rights for these women like free-legal help.

Me August 31, 2009 at 10:40 PM
