Newspaper Fights!!

We look forward to nothing else with so much eagerness, the way we look forward to that lonesome man who comes rushing on his bicycle with a bundle tied on the backseat of his cycle every morning.
I wonder if he ever sleeps at nite coz he is the first one to get up every morning.... Yeah! Yeah! I am talking about the newspaper delivery boy.
Every household(especially in India) waits for him for different reasons... Infact every member of the family has his/her own reason for reading the newspaper... Some men take it to the loo coz they can't answer the nature's call without reading thru the newspaper...the kids in the house look forward to the kids-supplement... the teenagers of the house look forward to the magazine sections...Women wait for the masala stories and Woman Specials... and this triggers
THE NEWSPAPER FIGHT....
This fight is going on from the day newspapers were introduced... Every morning the warriors get up to catch hold of their bait... so they beat the others and win it all ;)
hehe... I know this sounds weird... but then I have been watching this for years...
We have always been a joint family and we all fight for newspapers... Dad is an early-riser so usually he wins it...sometimes he purposely hides the paper on a weekend so we actually don't lazy around the whole day with the paper spread all over the bed... ;)
My bhai-log are a step ahead... they play the snatching game... so u have to purposely hold tightly to the paper while u r reading it...coz u may never knw when the predator comes to claim his target... lol
Sometimes the trophy(newspaper) gets all broken and torn up... coz the warriors try to snatch it... pull it and at the end of it all they usually lose it ;) ;)
Property, Job and Education supplements have no demand so they are all time available... Poor thingies!!
Gossip supplements and magazines are a HIT... no matter wat...
Once the scores are settled and if the trophy is still living to tell the story... the PRAJAA gets to hold it... ;) which means me and mom get to read it... else... Happy and Rustam know how to use it to their advantage and play TUG-OF-WAR with them... :D
Have you ever indulged in the newspaper fight?? ;) ;) Bolo...Bolo...

Nice post :)
you've very well portrayed the joint fmly...I liked "the fight" all over...humorous!

But I never had such fight...coz I never did the newspaper reading except once in a while...(I sound so strange, do I?) I just couldn't digest the too-much-politics and too-much-gossip. I used to be last person to handle "the trophy" and leisurely glance thru it...

Anyways keep up ur gud writing!

Anya April 5, 2009 at 12:20 PM

for me, no newspaper fight at home, because:
1) Not a joint family.Mom dad hv diff interests so they read different sections at the same time.
2)I'm home twice in a year,so whenever I have to read, tht wud be late morning when it is generally free...so as such never seen newspaper fights..
mazze aate honge isme waise, nai!!

Arnab Majumdar April 5, 2009 at 2:44 PM

I'm from a joint family as well, and I remember the long wait I had to endure on holidays to get hold of the paper. I wasn't foolish enough to try and tug it out of Didiya's hands :D

Never had the tug-of-war situation though, sounds like fun! Especially if you throw in participants like Rustam and Happy in the competition... nice one :)

Keep writing, Cheers...

Harry April 7, 2009 at 10:26 AM

Thanks to the e-newspaper thingie... news paper fights at my place have reduced considerably. Its only on Sundays when the ritual of newspaper snatching or i may put- 'apni baari malna paper padne ke liye' takes place. As a child when i used to try reading the paper holding it in my hands (which was the most tuff task- my hands n arms being small and timy i could hardly manage the newspaper) i would just wait for that day when i would also read the daily paper with poise and elegance (OMG!!!) Alas... I hardly get time to give this pleasure to myself now... but i still manage it on my PC screen..!!
